DON'T GIVE ALL YOUR PERSONAL POWER TO A THERAPIST
The following excerpt is from the self help
psychology book, Be Your Own Therapist.
There is a strong tendency among those who seek out therapists
to be looking for too many answers from them. "All I have to do
is find the right therapist, who will then fix everything. I'll
accept uncritically what my therapist says and attempt to act
the way my therapist thinks best." This type of thought process
(often unconscious) is all too common, even among therapists
themselves concerning their own therapists. Most of my recent
clients have been other therapists and their family members.
Initially, some therapists even ask such things as, "What should
I do?" and "What is best for me?". These questions reveal that
such clients are giving away too much of their personal power.
Lurking within them is a perpetual feeling of poor self-esteem
and a neverending sense of inadequacy in knowing what is right
for themselves.
| Adult goals usually yielding more contentment and happiness are being goals: being aware, being creative, being loving, being grateful, being ourselves, enjoying laughter, and honoring our emotions.

What is needed instead is to make the therapist into an
assistant rather than a guru. In many ways this book can help
you do just that. Understanding a bit about trauma, psychology
and therapy (just the few pages in Chapter 3) will help
significantly. Finding out more about one's problems via the
quizzes associated with each chapter will give a better sense of what
might be accomplished in therapy, in plain language instead of
psychobabble.

Self help is useful for most any psychological problem, but patience as well as dedication is usually required before the good stuff materializes. |
